The 16 teams participating in UEFA EURO 2008™ were set. Alongside hosts Austria and Switzerland, titleholders Greece, world champions Italy and the national teams of Germany, France, Croatia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic and Turkey will contest the final round of the European Football Championship from 7 – 29 June 2008.
The 16 teams will be divided
into four groups of four. The top two teams in
each group will advance to the quarter-finals,
with a knockout system in force from that stage.
Draw Procedure
Considering that the host associations are automatically qualified and have already been allocated into position A1 (Switzerland) and position B1 (Austria), the draw starts with Pot 1 in order to fill the first position in each group.
• A first ball is drawn from Pot 1 and the drawn team is placed into the first position of Group C. Thereafter, the second ball from Pot 1 is drawn and the respective team is placed into the first position of Group D.
The Draw continues with Pot 4 and ends with Pot 2.
• A ball is drawn from Pot 4 and placed into Group A. In order to determine the position of the team within the group, a ball is drawn from Pot a. Moving to Group B, another team is drawn from Pot 4. Once again, to determine the position of the team within the group, a ball is drawn from Pot b. The same procedure is repeated for Groups C and D (in consecutive order) until all balls from Pot 4 have been drawn and positioned in each group.
• The same procedure is followed for Pot 3.
• Finally, the same procedure is followed for Pot 2
