In the final
tournament, which will take place between 12 June
and 4 July 2004, the 16 teams will be divided
into four groups of four. The top two teams in
each group will advance to the quarter-finals,
with a knockout system in force from that stage.
As the host, Portugal is
positioned at the top of Group A. The remaining
teams are be split into four pots, with title-holders
France placed alongside Sweden and the Czech Republic
in the first pot. Seedings are based on the performance
of teams in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying
competition and the qualifying phase for UEFA
EURO 2004.
